RTP variants — the key spec to verify
Le Bandit ships in three RTP versions. The visual game, mechanics, and animations are identical across all three. Only the math underneath changes.
| Variant | RTP | House edge | Spread vs default |
|---|---|---|---|
| Default (certified) | 96.34% | 3.66% | — |
| Variant 1 | 94.23% | 5.77% | +2.11 pp |
| Variant 2 | 92.17% | 7.83% | +4.17 pp |
A variant-2 build doubles the long-run house edge compared to the certified default. Across 5,000 spins at A$1 stake, that gap costs around A$200 in expected value.
The four featured AU casinos all deploy the certified 96.34% default, verified in-game May 2026.
For unknown brands, always check the info panel (the (i) icon in-game) and scroll to the RTP line before depositing. We cover the spread between the three builds — and what it costs across a year of play — in our dedicated RTP variants article.
Volatility profile
Hacksaw classifies Le Bandit as high volatility. In practice:
- Base game: medium-high. Cascading wins keep the screen active, but the big base-game payouts (200×+) cluster around Rainbow Trigger events with multiple Golden Squares loaded.
- Luck of the Bandit free spins: medium-high. Most rounds land in the 20-200× range.
- All That Glitters Is Gold free spins: very high. Many rounds end below 50×; the max-win clips come almost exclusively from this mode.
- Treasure at the End of the Rainbow free spins: very high, with a different shape — Rainbow detonations either pay enormously or pay almost nothing.
The base-game hit frequency of roughly 28-32% means roughly 1 in 3 spins produces some kind of win, but most of those are small initial clusters that don't cascade far.
The cluster pays mechanic
Cluster pays replaces the old payline model entirely. There are no fixed lines, no "left-to-right only" rules. A win is formed by:
- 5 or more matching symbols
- Connected to each other horizontally or vertically
- (Diagonal adjacency does not count)
A single symbol can be part of only one cluster per spin. Clusters of 5, 6, 7, 8, ... 10+ pay progressively more — and 10+ symbol clusters of high-value Pots of Gold are where the real base-game money lives. For a deeper dive on how chains assemble, see Cluster Pays + Super Cascades.
Super Cascades
After a cluster wins:
- Winning symbols vanish.
- Symbols above drop down to fill the gap.
- New symbols enter from the top.
- New clusters can form, paying again on the same spin.
- Repeats until no new clusters form.
A single "spin" can produce 3-7 cascading wins on a hot streak. Most cascades stop after 1-2 chains; a few continue much longer.
Golden Squares & Rainbow Trigger
Golden Squares lock onto cells inside winning clusters during cascades. Each Golden Square stores one of:
- A coin value (cash amount paid out when triggered).
- A Clover (added to a collect counter; specific behaviour varies by mode).
- A Pot of Gold (the highest-paying reveal — multi-cell or multiplied coin).
Golden Squares persist across the cascade for the current spin only. They reset at the end of the spin unless a Rainbow Trigger fires.
Rainbow Trigger — when the Rainbow symbol lands during a cascade, every Golden Square on the grid reveals its hidden contents simultaneously. The result is the explosive moment of the base game and the centrepiece of free-spins rounds — full mechanics in our Rainbow Trigger explainer.
Free-spins modes summary
| Mode | Volatility | Picker theme | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luck of the Bandit | Medium-high | Smokey holds a horseshoe | Balanced play, regular wins |
| All That Glitters Is Gold | Very high | Pile of Pots of Gold | Chasing the 10,000× max |
| Treasure at the End of the Rainbow | Very high (swingy) | Arched rainbow over chest | Feast-or-famine players |

A max-win event is rare — the certified return-to-player includes the long-tail probability of this event in its 96.34% calculation. Don't size your bankroll assuming you'll hit it; we unpack the realistic odds in our 10,000× max win analysis.
What's not in the game
To save you searching:
- No fixed jackpot. No progressive pool, no Mega/Major/Minor tiers.
- No wild symbols in the traditional sense — Golden Squares + Pots of Gold + Rainbows do the lifting.
- No gamble feature to double winnings on a coin toss / card draw.
- No skill element — every outcome is RNG-determined.
- No multiplier ladder that builds across multiple spins (Golden Square contents reset each base spin).

Quick FAQ
Is 96.34% RTP good? Yes — it's slightly above the modern slot industry average (~96%) and well above land-based pokie returns (typically ~88-92%).
Why does Hacksaw ship three RTP variants? Casino operator preference. Studios producing a range of variants is common; the disappointing reality is that some operators choose the lower builds to widen their margin. Verify the variant in the info panel before you play.
Is high volatility the same thing as "bad odds"? No — volatility is about the shape of payouts (rare big wins vs frequent small ones). RTP is the long-run return percentage. They're separate dimensions.
How often will I trigger free spins? Roughly 1 in 250 spins on the default variant. Bonus Buy bypasses the wait if available.
Can clusters form diagonally? No — horizontal and vertical adjacency only.
Is this related to Hacksaw's Le Pharaoh? Same studio, different titles. Le Pharaoh is the Egyptian-themed sister release.
